Reliving the Glory Days of the Oregon Trail

by James R. Stoup Feb 09, 2009

Some of you out there will know exactly what I'm refering to when I say "You have died of dysentery". Oh, how the memories come flooding back. That ancient Mac sitting in your school's computer lab. The stacks of 5 1/4" floppy disks. The hours wasted playing some of the most basic games on the planet. Ah the memories.

How many of you out there remember the Oregon Trail? It was one of my favorite games as a kid. A few days ago I was playing Gears of War. Before that I was playing BioShock. Tomorrow I'll probably play a few songs on Guitar Hero. But I have to admit, when I found this site my face lit up and I immediately put aside everything else at hand to relive the memories as I made my trek across the country to the glorious state of Oregon.

I started playing this game on my laptop in bed around 10:30 p.m. My wife, after watching me play for a few minutes, was completely mystified as to why I was so enthralled. In fact, for the next two hours she would repeatedly ask me "why are you playing that stupid game?". I had no good answer. Certainly it wasn't for the revolutionary graphics of the compelling dialogue. And when I tried to explain that I was reliving a cherished childhood memory she just rolled her eyes.

However, for those of you who remmeber this game I encourage you to give it a try. It is old and somewhat hokey, I'll admit. But it is fun. Really fun. Yes, I know it is simple and certainly lacks the flair of just about any ame you have played in the last decade, but it is fun. And that is why, even though I could play newer games on my cell phone, I continue to play this goofy thing.

By the way, if you feel like playing just remember that my high score was 4,923.

  • When I was in 5th grade a buddy of mine and I would finish a weeks worth of classwork on a Monday morning (for some reason the teacher let us) and we’d spend the our new found free time the rest of the week in the library wasting away playing this game. We only had to go back for art, gym, etc…

    Good times. Good times indeed!
